What to Know when Shipping Pharmaceuticals

DATE: 06/06/16

Time, temperature security and quality control measures are critical elements of shipping pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceutical transporters must understand their role in the pharmaceutical cold chain transportation process to ensure the safe handling and delivery of biomedical pharmaceutical products. An increasing number of medicinal products require controlled storage and transportation conditions between 2 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius. For many pharmaceuticals, a mere 2 degree Celsius variation in temperature will jeopardize the entire shipment. Companies moving pharmaceutical products should utilize active and passive temperature controls to create an ideal shipping solution for temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. Active temperature controlled containers are a safe solution to store and transport pharmaceutical products. The use of active containers allows for thermal stability, which can be tailored to the exact temperature ranging from -20 degrees Celsius to +20 degrees Celsius regardless of external conditions. Many healthcare companies still tend to favor passive systems, which are typically insulated with polystyrene, polyurethane or vacuum insulated panels that includes gel packs, dry ice, or liquid nitrogen to maintain internal temperatures of +2 and +20 degrees Celsius for 24, 72 or 96 hours. Passive temperature controlled shipments should be able to accept minor fluctuations in temperature. Given the high value of pharmaceuticals, loss prevention and proper handling is always a vital concern. Many international shipping companies utilize airlines which have an approved service level agreement defining the handling and monitoring of all pharmaceutical shipments.
