The Case for Offering Free Shipping to Your Customers

The Case for Offering Free Shipping to Your Customers

DATE: 05/30/12

Free shipping is often touted as a way to increase sales, but is it truly a savvy ecommerce strategy? All signs seem to point to “yes.” In a survey conducted by Practical eCommerce, 46 percent of respondents said that offering free shipping to customers has increased their profits. This figure shouldn’t be surprising when you remember that multiple studies have found that online consumers pay close attention to ecommerce shipping rates when shopping online. In fact, many customers back out of purchases because they feel the shipping costs for their orders are too high. Now, when it comes to free shipping, there are many different ways you can offer this to customers. You could:

  • Offer free shipping for all products
  • Offer free shipping for select products
  • Offer free shipping for minimum purchase levels
  • Offer free shipping as a reward to loyal customers
  • Offer free shipping on a temporary promotional basis

However you choose to do it is up to you, but one thing seems to be clear. Many retailers are benefiting greatly by offering free shipping to customers. It’s certainly worth considering.
