No matter what type of shipment you’re sending out, having the right supplies handy is essential to ensuring your cargo is packed up safely and correctly. From boxes to bubble wrap to Styrofoam and much more, there are many different small package shipping supplies you need to have handy if you do a lot of shipping. Of course, the most important supplies are the boxes. Without a good box, your shipment stands little chance of reaching its destination in good condition. Remember, there are different types of boxes and shipping containers for different occasions. While you’ll probably mostly use basic corrugated boxes, there may be instances when you need insulated shipping containers, heavy duty boxes, or computer boxes. When it comes to choosing the right box for your shipment, there are a few things you need to keep in mind:
- Size of the contents being shipped—Obviously, you want to make sure the box you choose is big enough to accommodate the items you’re shipping. But just how big should it be? The box you choose needs to give you ample room to add packing materials for protecting your shipment. You need to be able to wrap the items in bubble wrap or fill up enough packing peanuts to protect the cargo and hold it in place.
- Type of cargo—If you’re shipping basic dry cargo, a standard corrugated cardboard box should do just fine. But if you’re shipping perishable goods or sensitive electronics, you might need a different type of container. If you’re even unsure of which box is best for your shipment, your small package shipping company should be able to point you in the right direction.
- Weight rating of the box—Most boxes are rated according to the amount of weight they can handle. So, check to see if you can find the weight rating of the box, and make certain you don’t exceed it as it could cause the box to bust open during shipping.
- General condition of the box—There’s nothing wrong with reusing old boxes. In fact, it’s good to recycle them and get as much as you can from them. But you need to make sure the box is still structurally sound. Some old boxes have been beaten so much that they just can’t support a load anymore.
In addition to boxes, there are also other small package shipping supplies every shipper should own. These include:
- Bubble wrap
- Packing peanuts
- Packing tape
- Tissue paper/newspaper
- Fragile labels
- Address labels
You can get all of the shipping supplies you need at your local boxes/postal store. You may even be able to find most of the things you need at a general department store. With small package shipping, the right supplies are everything. Always make sure you take the time to package your shipment carefully so that it arrives in the condition you packed it in.
