Transporting Hazardous Materials by Air

Updated 2025 from previous “The 7 Steps to Safely Ship Hazmat by Air” post.

Transporting hazardous materials by air is a highly regulated and complex process that demands precise execution, careful coordination, and strict compliance with international regulations. Each year, more than 3.3 billion tons of dangerous goods are transported by air worldwide. With global air cargo volumes expected to grow by 4% to 6% annually over the next five years, the number of dangerous goods shipments will rise significantly.

Given the potential risks, safety regulations must be followed without exception. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) works closely with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to identify risks, update regulations, and provide the most current guidelines to ensure the safe handling and transport of dangerous goods.

Understanding Dangerous Goods Classification

The United Nations assigns all dangerous goods to one of nine hazard classes. Each dangerous good falls into at least one category, and accurate classification ensures that the hazards are properly communicated throughout the transport chain:

  • Class 1 — Explosives
  • Class 2 — Gases
  • Class 3 — Flammable Liquids
  • Class 4 — Flammable Solids; Substances Liable to Spontaneous Combustion; Substances Which, in Contact with Water, Emit Flammable Gases
  • Class 5 — Oxidizing Substances and Organic Peroxides
  • Class 6 — Toxic and Infectious Substances
  • Class 7 — Radioactive Material
  • Class 8 — Corrosives
  • Class 9 — Miscellaneous Dangerous Substances and Articles, Including Environmentally Hazardous Substances

Requirements for Shipping Hazardous Materials by Air

Shipping hazardous materials by air requires careful coordination, in-depth knowledge of applicable regulations, proper packaging, accurate labeling, comprehensive employee training, and the selection of carriers authorized to transport such goods. Shippers should always consult with their air carrier prior to booking to understand any restrictions, limitations, or prohibitions that may apply.
